Catalyzing Newport coordinators, Kathleen Shannon and SueEllen Kroll, take inspiration from historic disruptors to make change today. With visiting catalysts from the Knight Foundation, the Local Action Team will investigate the role of cultural and historical engagement for attracting and supporting new talent, diversifying revenue streams, bringing together Newport’s strengths, and encouraging an informed and engaged citizenry.
Catalyzing Newport coordinators SueEllen Kroll and Kathleen Shannon ask us to reflect on our definition of “place.” This week Carol Coletta and Daniel Harris from the Knight Foundation join Newport’s cultural, historical, public service and community leaders to explore the role of history, including stories and spaces of civic engagement and sense of heritage, for strengthening identity and building a vibrant community.
Next week, July 27-31, Catalyzing Newport will welcome visiting catalysts from the Knight Foundation: Carol Coletta, Vice President of Community and National Initiatives and Daniel Harris, San Jose Program Director. Their residency will explore the theme of leadership from a place of courage, inspired by stories of Newport’s historic civic leaders, and address Catalyzing Newport’s impact areas of cultural entrepreneurship and urban growth and economy.
Tom Scheinfeldt and the Local Action Team are working to develop a Design + Humanities process that showcases Newport’s rich historical and cultural assets to advance collaborative efforts across disciplines and sectors. Tom Scheinfeldt, PhD, Director of Digital Humanities at the University of Connecticut,joins us this week (June 8-12) in Newport for his residency, which explore collaboration, design, and digital humanities.
On May 28, the Catalyzing Newport steering committee gathered for a special workshop on systems leadership and problem-solving with Dr. Peter Senge, senior lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning.
On Tuesday, June 9, visiting catalyst Tom Scheinfledt, PhD, will give a public talk at Ochre Court Library at Salve Regina University. Tom will explore how a “collaboration first” approach can accelerate new ways of thinking and impact the design and production of scholarly work.
On September 19, 2014 Paula Maricola—Executive Director at The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage—will participate in a salon-style conversation “What does it Mean to Catalyze Culture? Exploring practices that spark creativity, revitalize systems, and generate support for the cultural sector” hosted by Christina Bevilacqua—salonière and director of programs and public engagement at the Providence Athenaeum. The event is open to all board members from Catalyzing Newport’s partner organizations.
On November 10, 2014, Catalyzing Newport will host a webinar with the Brookings Institute Vice President, Bruce Katz, and selected leaders and government officials from across Rhode Island.
On June 9, the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution released “The Rise of Innovation Districts,” a new report analyzing this trend by Brookings Vice President Bruce Katz and Nonresident Senior Fellow Julie Wagner.
